Non-Launching of online publication series: Muslim-Christian Relations in Africa |

The launching of our online publication series: Muslim-Christian Relations in Africa was announced on 19th March. The first volume "The Use of Scripture in Swahili Tracts by Muslims and Christians in East Africa" by the co-editor of the series Dr John Chesworth was ready for publication. According to the relevant statutes on online publishing at the University of Bayreuth, Germany, every author has to sign a form to agree on the legal framework concerning intellectual property rights. Beside this formality the appropriate professor at Bayreuth University has to approve the academic quality of the publication.
The problem of signing by authors was settled after the editors pointed to the fact of deficient postal services in some African countries. Thus, scanned or photocopied signatures will be accepted. The second point is the problem of an appropriate professor at Bayreuth University. To understand this problem profound background knowledge about the German academic system is necessary. A lecturer or assistant professor does not have the status of being professor. In the German context a professor is more or less the equivalent of a full professor and / or of chair. As there is no professor at Bayreuth University with the competency in these fields it is not possible to sign this form by an appropriate professor. However, there is the competency at the University of Bayreuth but without being a full professor. To change such patronizing and dominating behaviour it is necessary to file a petition at the president of the university which will take a long time and the outcome is unclear. However we will start publishing using private web space as long as this problem is pending.
