Religion and Order in Africa
The international and interdisciplinary Summer Academy on “Religion and Order in Africa” will be held at the University of Bayreuth for the first time in July 2008. The academy addresses questions that represent the fundamental social challenges for the future of the African continent. The Summer Academy provides a forum for exchanging innovative ideas on these questions. The programme specifically welcomes African students doing research in this area. The Summer Academy highlights one of the excellent teaching and research focuses at the University of Bayreuth: African studies. Besides a series of lectures developed specifically for these students, the University of Bayreuth also gives the participants the opportunity to spend four weeks studying with other students in the university’s regular courses. The Summer Academy encourages an intensive exchange of ideas between the guests, their fellow students in Bayreuth, and external academics and researchers, thereby specifically promoting and advancing research on Africa. The social programme includes visits in Bayreuth itself, as well as excursions to the World Cultural Heritage of Bamberg, and to Munich and Berlin. Ten students from countries of Africa will be able to take part in the four-week programme. With its interdisciplinary approach, the Summer Academy is open to students of all arts and humanities subjects.
Requirements for participation at Summer Academy 2008:
- Open for outstanding MA and PhD candidates from Africa
- Proposal (10 pages)
- CV
- Two letters of recommendation by university professors
Participants are expected to have good English language skills and will be required to give a presentation on their research project.
